Could somebody enlighten me as to why you would go with a 9mm AR over a standard .556 or other rifle round? What are the benefits? Particularly the ones with just a buffer tube and no stock it looks a little weird to me but I'm new to the concept.

I have both, but went with 9mm due to cheaper ammo. The ones with no stocks are registered as pistols and in my opinion are just plinkers/novelties, but I'm sure they have some practical applications for those that own them. BTW what am I doing up and why so serious?

I used to think the same thing, WHY?
After I was able to play around with 1 I knew why.
The 9mm AR's are extremely fun for plinking & very accurate.
Ammo is cheap compared to 5.56, & like dustingaunder said "9mm AR's are flippin sexy".
The pistols are are alot of fun too, but not as much fun as the rifles.
In my experience they're an interim.
Most folks I know that have 9MM pistol AR's are waiting for their tax stamp to come back so they can slap a buttstock on it.
Not all, some are completely happy with the pistol configuration.
For those waiting to get their stamp back, the reason for using it in a pistol config., is so they can shoot it with the short barrel.
You can't legally have a barrel shorter than 16" on a rifle without a tax stamp.
If you've never tried it, give it a shot.
Run a full mag thru 1 & I guarantee you'll like it.
