A question for H&A guys I couldn't answer today

Somebody asked me today. when you turn your thermostat on your gas furnace from 70 and then to 75 does it burn hotter or just longer to reach 75?
I told them I just thought longer cause I thought it put out the same btu's all the time. But I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

It just burns longer—the flame is already a lot hotter than the ambient temperature, so it doesn’t need to burn hotter.

I have told my Wif thousands of times in our years together, "setting the thermostat to higher temp does NOT warm the car quicker."

Depends on your furnace.
There are single stage furnaces like many(most) have grown up with but there are 2stage furnaces these days where there are effectively a low and high. They’re definitely out there

Ours is a two stage and definitely heats hotter and quicker.

2 stage furnaces start on low fire and switch to high fire if the stat doesn't satisfy in a few minutes . modulating furnaces ramp the gas up and down depending on the need. the majority of gas furnaces are single stage and just run longer at same temp to reach the set temp on the stat.

electric furnaces bring on 1 or more heat strips ( resistance coils)depending on demand usually 1 at a time in sequence
