I was out on patrol today and drove up on two KIDS screaming at each other. The particular area had a lot of trees and brush so it was hard to initially see what was in his hands. Anyhow, upon closer inspection I noticed the one kid had a large knife screaming and waving it in the other kids direction (they were separated by a bicycle). I couldn't really believe what I was seeing. Anyhow, I got out of my vehicle and drew my service weapon and quickly walked toward him shouting commands. THANK GOD he listened and didn't make any movements toward the other kid. I had already began to take tension off the trigger. The kid dropped the knife and stepped backward and got on the ground as instructed. I don't think he realized just how close he came to losing his life today. Come to find out, the boy was 12 years old. I have a 11 year old boy at home. I couldn't imagine how it would have been the rest of my life if I had to shoot this boy.
Most kids would have been scared shitless, but this kid had a damn attitude. I have a feeling we will be dealing with this kid in the future. What the hell is wrong with kids these days. These were two boys that had been spending time together, spending the night at each others homes and such according to mom. The 12 year old told me he grabbed the knife because the other kid had a rock......what happened to good ole fist fights? I was floored and it has really bothered me this whole evening. Can't believe I actually came close to shooting a kid.
