According to census data, 39 percent of Kalamazoo’s students are white, and 44 percent are African-American. One of every three students in the Kalamazoo district falls below the national poverty level. One in 12 is homeless. Many of them are the first in their families to finish high school; many come from single-parent homes. Some are young parents themselves: Kalamazoo has one of the highest pregnancy rates among black teenagers in the state.

And yet, for the vast majority of the 500-plus students who graduate each year in Kalamazoo, a better future really does await after they collect their diplomas. The high-school degrees come with the biggest present most of them will ever receive: free college.

It's all part of his plan!

This man get major props from me. However, I am absolutely against the government forcing people that have worked hard and are making this kind of money to cover where others fall short. If someone has the means, and they want to help out that should be their decision. Not the governments.

Hilarious, but completely true.

Yep, thats a true statement. We do need ditch diggers.
Not every person in the US is going to go to college, nor do they want to.

They prefer to work from the sweat of their brow, and forge ahead in life.

Will they make more money overall than a college graduate?
Probably not, Unless their major is in Egyptian politics, or cake decorating, but, while the college person is paying off student loans, the ditch digger is paying his way through life.

Its not a bad gig going through life without a degree. Trust me, I know this.

Well said Dennis. The video that Mike Rowe put out on this subject is great... people need to remember that not everyone will end up with the super high paying jobs... even IF they end up going to college.

This. I went to school for 7 years for a masters in electrical/computer engineering. i have $40k in student loans and make a little more than half what my dad makes as an HVAC guy. Good thing i enjoy being an engineer, otherwise I'd hate myself
