I've been wanting to try the P17 but I haven't found the right deal at the right time on one yet.
Yeah, they are supposed to have the MSRP of $199.95,,,
But due to the Covid madness the prices were all over the board.

I saw them retail priced at $299.00 for several years,,,
With the longest average being about $249.00.

My friend ordered these two from Buds when they were $229.00,,,
But he also ordered 4 extra mags (for a total of 5 per pistol),,,
I'm paying exactly what he paid for the pair.

Today, they are on Buds for $218.99.

I've been waiting for a slightly used sub $200 example to show up here but I would still probably have to talk myself into driving very far pick it up.

I talk myself out of snatching up gun deals on here quite a bit because I don't really "need" them. I've done that twice already this week!

I think CDNN has P17s for $199 right now. I'm a big Kel-Tec fan. But, the P17 was a bit of a disappointment. Has some issues going completely into battery without a light tap on the back of slide. That's really the only problem. I'm hoping that clears itself up with a little more shooting.

I have a few .22 pistols. Ruger LCP (100% reliable and really small), Taurus TX22, FN-502 and the P17. Surprisingly enough, the Taurus is the best of the lot and beats the Ruger simply because it's more fun to shoot since it's a larger-framed gun. Had to send the first FN back...they replaced it with a new one and the P17 had the issues I mentioned.

Yeah that $199 doesn't sound too bad until you add shipping, tax, and transfer. Next thing you know you could be out near $250.

I don't want one nearly as much since I got a great deal on a threaded barrel S&W Victory 22 earlier this year.

Heck I rarely go shooting anymore so I don't know why I even bother. I keep telling myself I'll shoot more when it cools off outside because I don't like indoor ranges but I hate using up my ammo too. Lol.

About 9.5 months altogether, from purchase to my door.

This is the short version, there is another 2"+ that goes on the end if wanted.

So, if you want to know what the long version looks like, just imagine another 2". Y'all should be used to doing that. :boxing3:

Like the old line goes, "I can't give you 10, however, I can give you 8 with a raincheck for 2."

if they had given the lcp a better capacity and threaded barrel out of the gate, I think it would have took off a little better. Fine guns either way though.

Well,,,
I picked up the P17's yesterday.

230818-KelTecs.jpg

Took 'em to the range and I have only one thing to say.

I Like 'em!

So, let's do a real range report,,,
Or at least my initial impression of the guns.

I ran 3 mags of 4 different kinds of ammo through each of them,,,
That's a lot of loading with 6 mags @ 16 rounds each,,,

That's 96 rounds for you math challenged folk,,,
Or 384 rounds total.

Federal Auto Match - No malfunctions at all.
Remington Golden Bullet - One fail to eject/feed (more on this later).
Federal Bulk Pack from Wal Mart - No malfunctions at all.
CCI 40 grain RN Mini Mags - No malfunctions at all.

I couldn't resist doing the two-gun rapid fire with these ladies (Rem Golden Bullet),,,
That was a blast to just mindlessly send 32 rounds downrange as fast as I could pull the triggers.

I had that one fail to eject/feed during this,,,
But I honestly believe that it was because I held the guns very close together,,,
I think what happened was that the gun in my left hand ejected the empty properly enough,,,
But I think it hit the right hand gun and literally bounced back into the action of the left hand gun.

I even ran the remains of my "odd ball ammo" through one of them,,,
That's the plastic jar that has the leftovers from many different ammo brands,,,
I loaded the rounds ( at least 5 different kinds) and rapid fired 48 rounds with no malfunctions.

At 15 yards I was holding a nice cluster of holes on the target,,,
But I was a bit put off that both guns were shooting high,,,
Then I adjusted my aim to "Pumpkin on a Post",,,
The clusters moved down to the bulls eye.

When I stretched the distance to 25 yards,,,
The cluster grew a bit but was still on center target.

Not that my 71 year old eyes hit the bulls eye every time,,,
But at least dang near every shot was on the 6" paper.

Somehow I had it in my head that these were striker fired guns,,,
But reading the manual they are a standard single-action with internal hammer.

So when you chamber a round,,,
Your pistol is now ready to fire.

The safety is the only thing that will prevent it from firing,,,
I wish it had a decocker or some other way to "lower the hammer" but that's just me.

It's pretty much the same for all single-action firearms, isn't it?

The trigger on both guns feels exactly the same to me,,,
They both are very light on the pull,,,
And reset nicely.

Easily as nice as my Ruger SR-22 in single-action mode,,,
Without the long-hard pull of the double-action first shot mode.

The pistols came with three mags each,,,
Which is a bonus worth at least $60 to $70 dollars for other guns,,,
But mags for the P17 are relatively inexpensive at $14.99 a piece at Buds.

My friend got 4 extra mags when he ordered the pistols,,,
So I have 5 mags each for the two pistols,,,
I'll leave the four extras unopened.

The mags are plastic,,,
And like all high-cap mags,,,
Just a bit hard to load all 16 rounds into.

There is no follower button to hold down while loading,,,
And there is no opening to see how many rounds are in the magazine,,,
So when you are loading you must keep count of the rounds as you load the mags.

That's a bit of a bummer but what the heck,,,
Nothing I can't get used to.

The barrels are threaded for a suppressor which I'll never utilize,,,
Each pistol does come with a thread adaptor & wrench,,,
And a barrel nut to protect the threads.

They even came with a cute little "range flag",,,
I'll probably lose them fairly soon,,,
But they were a nice touch.

Tear down is very easy indeed,,,
And the manual is easy to read with lots of images.

So overall I am very pleased with these two pistols,,,
I believe they will make great trainers for my newbie friends,,,
And if someone wanted to carry a .22 as a self defense weapon,,,
I think the 16 round capacity and ease of use would make these ideal candidates.

With shipping, transfer fee, 4 extra mags, and 9.313% state sales tax,,,
I paid a grand total of $603.84 (that's $301.92 each) for them,,,
But even at that being $101.93 over the MSRP,,,
I don't feel overcharged at all.

Except for that sales tax rate,,,
But that's another can of worms.

Now I just hafta get off of my dead arse,,,
And make that Black Widow two gun rig for them.
