Most people take the viewpoint of "someone else will do it".

Then you have the political campaign. There will be a lot of bad information out there, and people will believe it and accuse the petitioners of trying to swindle them.

Ya, getting it on the ballot is only half the battle. Even if you manage to do it relatively cheap with lots of grass roots help, you then have the campaign and need a serious influx of money. If it every gets written up though, I would volunteer to be out there with a clipboard getting signatures even though in general, I hate people (maybe not hate, but I'm not a socializing, say hello to strangers, people person).

Same here. I also know of a few people who would be willing to sign and get things rolling. I am not a "social networking" type person so don't ever expect to see my on twitt ers and face space or any of that junk. But I have my server space paid for and if someone has or can pick up a domain name I would have no problem setting up something with information for those people interested.

Same here, that's why I went and deleted all my social networking accounts. I'd be willing to start them all back up again for something like this though.

As far as getting it written up, this seems to have worked for Vermont all these years:

That the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the State - and as standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; and that the military should be kept under strict subordination to and governed by the civil power.

I think a grassroots effort would be effective, but part of it depends on what ballot it goes on. Does it have to go on a major election ballot? The majority of people who vote, only vote in presdential elections, and even then a lot just vote straight party. I think we have motivation on our side. I don't think there would be enough antis motivated to get out and vote something like this down if they weren't already going to be voting anyway. However, gun owners, who have a lot to gain by something like this passing, have a greater incentive to get their butts to the voting booths. I think it's doable, and I think a grassroots effort could do it.

The way I understand it, you get everything written up and file it with the state. Once filed you have 90 days. After that signatures get counted and the title must be set and once that is done it goes on the ballot for the next election unless the governor sets a special election. That's the short version anyway.
