If you do it yourself your going to need a really good respirator, a dust mask is not sufficent to protect you from the microscopic size of dried flaking asbestos fibers.

I work at a Construction Managment Co and we have to abate buildings sometimes. Asbestos used to be in alot of different materials. Paint, glue, insulation, plaster, pipe, shingles, siding, etc.
Asbestos left undisturbed isnt really a problem. A lot of buildings that we use every day still have asbestos in them (Schools come to mind). If its the type that can become airborn (fryable) then stay away and let he pros handle it. Honestly, even if it isnt fryable, you should probably stay away. Chances are that if there is some asbestos there is likely going to be more.

Definitely get a pro. You'll need permits and want documentation of abatement.
If you don't get a pro, you'll still need permits, safe removal clothing, disposal materials, respirators, someone to help you and more. Keep it wet. Do not eat (j/k).
