It is feasible (and likely) that they are indeed recording serial number to owner. It also could be (less likely) they were checking to see if it was stolen or not ?
Probably checking to see if it's stolen. I have never had any officer ever ask to run my guns serial number. I have had it literally thrown in my car though, then be told to sit on it.

I’m sure if you asked, and they answered honestly, being a law-abiding gun owner makes you the problem. They likely figure that they just haven’t caught you yet……
In my store for the last 45 days most NICS checks come back delay for 10-30 min and are then given a proceed. Before that maybe 1 out of 10 would be a delayed.
