I got to use my D cell powered electric socks last week when it was 15 outside..
had them and my regular everyday NOT waterproof boots on.

That worked great...better than anything i have tried yet.
Well when i rode my motorcycle in the winter or was out for all day i would have my tennis shoes on and slip on rubber boots
that would fit over my tennis shoes..that worked great..
Dry feet and breathable shoes.
Those waterproof boots always seem to get damp from my feet inside..then i am cold..

I have also tried paper towels or toilet paper on my feet then socks then the waterproof boots..
That does ok..
You sweat and make the shoe damp and all bets are off..you will get cold feet.

I tried many gloves while riding MC neoprene sucked!! hands got damp inside and then froze.
Welding gloves were best.
If you have mittens or gloves with fingers and a mitten cover you will be toasty.
All the fingers sharing the same area keeps hands warmer longer.

Break the wind and keep sweat down.
Something like this for gloves.

Simms foldover mittens for fishing. I dont use them but a lot of people wear them. Windstopper material, fingerless and I believe they have a pocket for handwarmers. As for boots, too tight isnt good. You need a little air space. This is something discussed amongst fly fishing trying to have warmer feet. I have an old pair of boots with felt liners, heavy and bulky but warm.

Feet - Merino wool socks with boots that have ~800 grams thinsulate (pick your favorite brand)

Hands - Under Armour glove liner with fingerless wool gloves.

This setup has worked for me in low temperatures. Sometimes I will wear standard socks under the merino wool socks in case my feet get too hot. That way, I can shed the merino wool sock layer. Same goes with the fingerless wool gloves. If it gets to hot, I just get rid of the fingerless gloves and wear the under armour liners.

As far as feet go I love alpaca or merino wool socks and it's hard to beat a pair of kennetreck or Mendel boots with 800gram thinsulate. It never really gets cold enough here to need them but I love my schnees pack boots with the liners. I'll wear them without the liners when it's cold and I have to get horseback.

And for gloves these are the best I've found.

Hot pockets, buy them by the case in spring sellout.
One in each top pocket one in each boot above the heel, nylon socks under wool, get boots 1 size larger , tight boots is coold.
Military cold gear from the surplus store rounds it out.
The foldover thinsulate mittens work good too , even with a bow( cold hands dont shoot well )

Happy New Year
