PD will hold in evidence until after trial.

At that time, IF no officer wants it and it hasn't disappeared from evidence; it will be returned.

I heard a story that back in the day in Mississippi, if an officer lost a firearm that was in evidence, they were docked something like $20 from their paycheck, which essentially let them buy guns from evidence for $20, and during that time, NOBODY got their stuff back once it was "evidence".

Probably depends on the Sheriff's office if you get one back or not.
Gun crime against me got the rifle returned after the trial and appeal.
Took a couple of years.
Gun stolen from me and recovered a year later in Nebraska in a truckers cab was returned pretty quick.
I don't believe there is a set rule of return.

Had a Springfield Hellcat stolen June 2022. August 2022, cops recovered and notified him. He's called regularly, always got the "we will look into it"....here it is nearly December 2024, and he just got it back today. I asked if they had any reason or explanation, and he just said the officer who handed it to him acted surprised they were even releasing it back to him???
I used an old S&W model 36 back in the early 80s to defend myself after a bad guy "Attempted" to rob me. The police confiscated it for "evidence" I am starting to think I will never get it back. (it's been over 30 years)
