That certainly looks like battle scars on him. He's no spring chicken either. Right at or past his prime I'd bet. I need to find the pic of my old warrior.

That's a heck of a buck do you have some big body bucks that have been whipping him?
I witnessed about a 130 inch 8pt with a big body whip a buck of that caliber at a draw in hunt at the Wichita Mountains, the buck with the larger rack started the fight but the 8pt got him all the way down on the ground.
