Dealerships tend to be pretty scummy and dishonest. I have had several dealerships flat out lie in order to repair things that were fine. I stay completely away from them now. Research to find a reliable vehicle, get a factory service manual and fix anything yourself or find a mom and pop mechanic.

What actions do you take to push back against that?

Honestly.... I don't know. I use reputable mechanics that friends and family trust. It's the best I can do. But the criminal element in the world is getting more and more breaks while the common man is getting the shaft more often because of them. Don't try to deny that.

I understand that you hold that perception. It's easy, so easy to feel that way, especially with the media doing its part.
But without evidence I can't acknowledge that criminals get away with more than they used to.

Joyride is completely inexcusable - and that's one of the reasons I own my shop and a dyno! If a customer has complaint - I just go with them on a drive, customer behind the wheel.

On the flip side - the invasion of privacy is plain criminal! The fact that some of you are "ok" with it - simply boggles my mind.

South Carolina law provides a variety of restrictions and procedural considerations with respect to non-consensual recording. The South Carolina criminal procedure code provided guidelines on acts of spying on another or using any electronic devices to invade someone else's privacy. Not only are police forbidden from recording one's conversations without consent or court order, but private citizens also cannot record communications that they are not a party to. This type of conduct carries a minimum misdemeanor conviction.

P.S. If anyone cares, here is my observation (from professional point of view)

The car came in with 39k and "the gears would grind" problem. Wear on the disk really depends on the driving technique - and 39k isn't' really out of norm, especially for a 4000lb SS Camaro with 426hp; basically what I'm saying it needed a clutch job anyhow.

Dealership offered him free pressure plate (drivetrain warranty) and owner pays for "disk" - which is a normal wear part: sounds like a fair offer.

I am not defending the "joy ride" in any sense; but we are listening to one sided story - he says "parking lot speeds" - who's there to say that he didn't tell mechanics that the problem happens on high-rpm one-two shift? which than indeed would require spirited driving.

Either way - the dealership should take care of the clutch, and the guy should have criminal charges for invasion of privacy - just my $.02

Considering that he had to have been on the recording at the very beginning (having pushed record) and it was all on a single track, would that be the required single party consent?

Its his private property so he should be able to record who the hell he wants to. These scum bags shouldn't be protected.

Incorrect. Just because I own a McDonald's, it doesn't mean I can install cameras in restrooms.

You can't record conversations you are not part of or have expressed consent or court order.

The guy gave dealership expressed permission to test drive the car - how the test drive was done is between dealership and it's employees. If the car got damaged - that's violation of property.

Recording of private conversation without consent should be between the person recording it and state prosecutor. This is simply violation of human rights.

If this is somehow muddy waters - I'm sorry - but indeed this country is going down a sewer.
