As mentioned good pad density is key to your carpet lasting as well as being stretched tight enough. Thicker pad isn't always as good without density, the carpet will de-laminate over time. Issues with wood or laminate could be high moisture content in the slab and how flat is the floor. Do your homework before you jump. Some of those things you don't initially see could pop up.

Opinion.....put down tile....easier to clean...lasts longer.....put down throw rugs to accent the area if you want.

Agreed. Many years ago before tile and wood were popular we tiled majority of the house and since then have done the rest, I mean even closets. I, and respect 1Shott very, very much, but tile is the way, UNLESS, you have little ones, that is the only drawback, since they hit their heads on the floor quite often and that is the only reason to have dirt attracting carpet. I have no problem with mopping the tile when needed. Hate carpet, but I am old and so what do I know.
Good night and good luck.

Thats another reason I said throw rugs....you can take them out and clean them..
NO vacuum is gonna get the dirt outta carpet ...especially ..thick with thick padding

Berber is the most durable in high traffic areas. Good pad is critical to taking full advantage of good carpet. If you have pets with long nails berber can be an issue though as their nails may get stuck in a "loop" of the berber carpet and either yank the nail out of their foot or cause a run in the carpet. Neither situation is good. But, if you keep your pet's nails trimmed berber is great.

berber , nothing better than getting a strand of that caught up in the vaccum. rips a seem from one end of the room to the other. berber is 1970's.
this is very true with the berber. if you are in the tulsa area i would look up Vanco flooring. Brad is a good guy. I forgot about the new Rhino Carpet that has been out for about a year now(i think). i can't remember the warranty details but the carpet itself is pretty sturdy. A bunch of the apartment complexes in the area are switching to it because of the durability.
