If what some of the posters on the Kansas forum say is true, to wit; that the various Indian Nations don't have to recognize SDA or other carry licenses, that means that our SDA licenses are no good through large sections of the state.

Just what is the status of SDA and other gun licenses in Tribal jurisdictions? Note that I am not referring to casinos, bingo halls and the like, but just going down the street or sidewalk.

Thanks for any help.

PS I looked for but couldn't find this subject.

I have the same question. I suspect it is murky. On the other hand I have never heard of any permit holders getting into any legal problems on tribal lands.

Someone may correct me, but the way I have always been told is Tribal Land is Federal Land. My wife has tribal land from her family and if anything ever happens on the land, only a federal agent (BIA, Game Warden, Tribal Police etc) can come onto the land without being invited onto the property. With that being said, being on tribal land is like being on Military base, where its probably not allowed, but it would be up to that governing power to decide. I would contact that tribes police or BIA to find out the specifics of that area.

Tribes fall under "Treatment as states" clause.
So they can make their own rules about guns just like other states.
I am not aware of any who have made an issue of this though.
You would think the state would have made efforts to deal with this.

Indian Tribal lands are sovereign lands. They don't have to recognize a dang thing the State says. This is muddied by a myriad of various agreements with the State and Federal government. I.E. If they want funds for a certain program, they have to pretend they belong and play ball with whomever is giving them funds. My in-laws live on tribal land in elder housing and they cannot have a firearm. Period. I'm not aware of any issues with SDA, but I have seen signs barring firearms at smoke shops and such at the entrance of the drive and proclaiming the Federal Trust Land thing. As long as you are just driving through on a public road, I can't see a problem, but actually pulling off and entering tribal property is another matter. I know that I wouldn't want to get caught on indian lands with a gun and see what happens, you'll likely lose your gun at the least.

the short answer for Oklahoma, is there are Indian "Nations" which are not the same as truly Federal reservations.

e.g. all of Osage County is Osage Nation, but only that little chunk of Pawhuska (technically, next to Pawhuska) is the reservation. Don't carry in there....

Ya, thats an area just inside the Pawhuska city limits locals call 'Indian Camp'. Takes the Feds to bust you on anything there with the Osage tribal police holding you for them.
