Hey man, for the price? Run it. Re-gear if you put on bigger tires. Pull-A-Part is full of 10 bolts, just waiting to be robbed of their 4:10 gears. Look for 6 banger trucks.

If I could find a guy with a really clean 3/4 ton M1009 K5 that he was wanting to trade, I'd be swapping my 5.7 gas K5 right now. Just wanting that set up.

It is a Chevy. Cheapest, most plentiful, most available parts period.

They're niche engines that are actually kinda neat for being in an older, large SUV. Like dowmace and Super Dave said, just keep the engine running reliably, don't don't expect miracles from it, and remember that new gears are your best friend if you want more pep. You can get over 20 MPG if you have it set up right. Someone dropped a 6 speed in there and is reporting getting 25 if they go easy on the skinny pedal.

Check out Expedition Portal and see come cool burbs from mild to wild, and there are ones with the Detroit Diesels on there. It's also but dropped into Land Rovers before (though the Mercedes 300 diesel is as well). For the right price, I would take a 'burb with one and make it a nice, clean family 4x4 with some tall and skinny tires and gears, avoiding heavy plate bumpers and armor to keep it light. And honestly I'm a Ford/Mopart guy.

Sounds like you need an Excursion with a 7.3l powerstroke:)

I'd love one for sure, but they're newer and still $$$$$. At least compared to a diesel 'burb that's 10+ years older.

The Liberty announced their CRD back in late 2004 about a month after I purchased my gasser :-/

They made the Grand Cherokee with a CRD for a while; some people swapped in gears (like all the way to 3.07 if 2wd) and are pulling close to 30 MPG. One of those with highway gears would be a pretty sweet grocery getter 4x4 for bad weather. 2LO would be great in ice and snow, and more frequent 4Lo would help with those gears whenever off road, but it'd still never be a rock crawler. Probably more than plenty of gear for what I would do though.

Back in 89, I had a diesel GM Malibu wagon. It had a 350 GM converted into diesel. It was not very good. Head gasket issues, I had to rewire the glow plugs to a manual toggle switch. It was probably the worst vehicle I ever owned. I don't think GM thought through all the issues on that model before they put it on the street.
