Back in 89, I had a diesel GM Malibu wagon. It had a 350 GM converted into diesel. It was not very good. Head gasket issues, I had to rewire the glow plugs to a manual toggle switch. It was probably the worst vehicle I ever owned. I don't think GM thought through all the issues on that model before they put it on the street.

You weren't alone. The 350 diesel is a far cry from the 6.2/6.5 models. It is honestly an indefensible POS even for the biggest of bad bow tie enthusiasts.

Here's a whole page talking about the head bold problems that plagued this thing. Warning, this isn't safe for life, because it's like a circa 2000 lycos/tripod page with terrible spelling.

We looked hard at the Liberty diesels when they came out, just not enough room for what we needed.

When I was single, or it was just me and the girl (now wife), it was great. With us and now two kids, it's really, really full. Like, use the roof basket and/or hitch cargo basket full when traveling for a 5 day trip.

In the next 12 months, we're probably going for something larger, which sucks because we have two paid-for cards at the moment and biting the bullet for something else if gonna be painful. Wife wants a minivan, which I am strongly against. I want a 7 or 8 passenger 4x4. I'm trying to sell her on a late model GX470 like this.

We're steering way off topic here, but oh well. We've beat the OP question into the ground already.

Built FJ60. :)

This is probably my favorite rig ever. Pure sex.

Absolutely. I'd take that for myself though. I owned an FJ80 (1992) for a short time. The 80 series with a 3FE is a gutless wonder but I still loved that thing. The rear jump seats are a nice addition, which is why I am eying the GX line. Nothing wrong with a blinged out Prado! :D

The wife wants something that seats 7-8, which isn't necessarily bad when you're hauling the family of 4 plus a couple of stowaways (like my parents) around. I told her some lawn chairs in the bed of my quad cab Dakota is perfect, but she protests.

Not sure what you're wanting for fuel milage, but when our diesel excursion decides to go south, we'll buy another one, and then another one. Our 7.3l gets 18 on the highway. There's a v-10 excursion in the OSA classifieds, $6500 IIRC, all the v-10's I've been around get 11-14mpg in town, highway or towing. Of course if you go 2wd, add a couple mpg. We'll take the room over the mpg of say a CRV or Pilot.

I had a 1 ton pick up with the 6.5L in it. The engine was prone to heat soak and it went through injection pumps which are not cheap.

This brings back nightmares. A place I used to work had a 1 ton 6.5L stake bed and a couple of vans we ran parts in. The stake bed was in the shop constantly. 14 (yes that's fourteen!) injector pumps later they got rid of it. Gluttons for punishment...
