College Grad Not Liking the 40hr Work Week

I was in construction for a few years. Start at 5:30 am end at 7pm. I was a Supt. so I had to stay and do Hands and welders time and make orders for supplies. I would get out of there around 10pm. 70% of the time it was 7-days a week and the short weeks were 6-days.

I'm trying to get the point across to my kids that if you're smart and willing to work your a$$ off, there's going to be lots of opportunity out there if she's the competition. That, or everything is going to collapse on them because there are too many like her to carry.

Even before “the kids these days” showed up it’s easy to outshine the competition. It’s surprising how many grown men don’t know how to write a resume. Or wear a clean pair of pants to an interview. Hell, my last job I had a coworker who I am pretty sure couldn’t read. Our “shop Mexican” (every heavy equipment or truck shop has one) could barely speak English and would help this grown man read.

I’ve seen construction workers, oilfield workers, truck drivers, mechanics that would just get up and leave once they hit their 8 or 10 or 12 hours for the day and leave; unwilling to spend the extra 30 minutes on the clock to finish what they were doing. One thing that I have realized changing careers is how people have such a utter lack of soft skills as well. Just showing some initiative and developing some soft skills will create a large advantage for kids showing up in the workforce.

Seems she would have been better suited to forego college and obtain a simple Mrs. degree.

Agreed. I wish there was a reliable way to predict work ethic when hiring. There are very few jobs that actually require some type of brainiac. In my experience, average intelligence and a super work ethic puts you in the top 10%. If you also are blessed with high intelligence you can be a star.

Plenty of part time jobs out there if she doesn't want to work 40 hrs a week.
