Cosmoline and leather and canvas

Anyone have any tips on cleaning cosmoline from canvas or leather? I got a Nagant 91/30, and the accessories that came with it were loose in the box, and got comsoline smeared on them from contact with the rifle. I'd rather not ruin these things, even thought they hold little value to me at this point.

good question. i havn't had the problem yet but i can see how it could ruin some accessories.

Try scrubbing the canvas with a 10% solution of Dawn dishwashing soap, a tooth brush and warm water. It should work on the leather as well. Rinse with warm water and the leather will have to have a treatment with Mink oil or something similar to replace the natural oils the Dawn is going to remove.
