What does it take to make a gun "custom" adding on parts, drop in trigger, some smith work? Or is it a full build from a custom gun shop like a $5000 Blaser?

Ive seen plenty of guns in the classifieds called custom that I would not consider custom

What are your thoughts?

I have a good friend in Shawnee who makes custom guns. By that, he starts with bare metal and tools the gun. All of it is handmade. That's what I would call a custom gun. Any thing else is just accessorized.

If the "accessories" are permanent that tends to make it "custom" to me.

For example: Cerakote a gun and replace fitted pieces makes it custom.

The confusion I see is that people think since their gun is now "custom" that it makes it more valuable.

I had my Grendel upper custom ordered the way I wanted it but since it was just a combination of parts anyone could choose it's not a "custom" upper if that makes sense. To me taking a factory gun and having it's parts modified permanently to alter it's performance or appearance to suit you makes it "custom". From there you can argue lightly to heavily customized.

Custom is in the eye of the beholder. I have a Kimber Custom II. Its off the shelf so why in the hell is it custom? I have a buddy that has one and he tells everyone hes got one of them custom kimbers.....
Some people care some people care less. If i take the time to make something truly custom chances are im never going to sell it.

Just like when a person makes a hot-rod. He takes the shell of the car and fine-tunes it, puts different things in it, a cut here and a snip there. I have 2 Colts a 70 Series and a 80 Series, that was worked over by Yost-Bonitz, same with my Chuck Warner Delta Elite, Behlert, AD Swenson, Tussey and many more Smiths. There is no comparison in the before and after, some you have to look hard to find the work some you can see a mile off. The first 2 are Yost-Bonitz, they look almost alike, and are a little hard to tell from stock. the next is a matching pair(not on purpose) of Austin Behlert. 1924 Colt and a Browning HP. Delta Elite custom finish with square trigger guard. I consider these all custom's. Now if I bought a Les Baer or a Brown or Wilson. I would consider them semi custom.
80 Series Colt.

custom - adjective
Definition of CUSTOM
1: made or performed according to personal order
2: specializing in custom work or operation <a custom tailor>

If any change is made to a firearm to make it more personally pleasing to the owner it is, by definition, "custom".

One man's "custom" is another man's project.
