I discovered over the weekend that I have a rat colony underground in my back yard, when I saw a rat chowing down on my dog's food, while my dog just watched....

So far I've killed 2 big fuggs with the old school snap traps, but they've gotten wise. I saw lowes has some of the new style plastic ones for rats (i've used them with mice with great success), but some reviews say they don't always snap the neck right away.

If that should be the case, what method should I use to put them out of my misery? Shovel to the neck?

I considered duct taping my mosin bayonet to a broomstick, but, while epic as hell, that could get messy....

And use poison, if you can do it while keeping it away from the dog.

That's the problem with poison; once you set it out, it's hard to control the poison's environmental fate. Not only could the dog get into it, scavengers that snack on the poisoned rat's carcass can also pick up the poison; the stuff can get into the soil and water; etc. I wouldn't go this route except as an absolute last resort.

Man there isn't much more fun to be had than hunting rats with an air/pellet rifle. Get yourself a headlamp and do it when it starts getting dark. Those eyes are easy to spot with a light. Some of them are pretty tough though. My buddy has a pig farm and there are a few running around with multiple gunshot wounds, but those are the big ones......
