I then got a few of those large rodent sticky pads. They work great. They will also catch scorpions, spiders, bugs, etc. Wife got a mouse in her car and it wouldn't touch the trap, sticky pad worked the first night.

Drop the rat and pad into a bucket of water and then the trash. Not as fun as guns and explosives but lethal and legal.

This is your answer. I keep those in my shop/barn where there are no pets allowed. There are holes in the corners to nail them to the ground, or put a string in them. I caught one with only one foot in it. He made it to the wood pile. Had to tear down the wood pile to get him out of there before he became toxic.

Sticky traps are great as long as you are sure you're not going to catch other things like pets, squirrels and such. Those big plastic traps called "tomcats" work great on ratus ratus. I had a big rat who got too comfy outside the backdoor so I released the tomcat and sure enough I saw him stick his head in to chomp the peanut butter and POW! rat Valhalla....it's actually a bit disturbing to watch.

I discovered over the weekend that I have a rat colony underground in my back yard, when I saw a rat chowing down on my dog's food, while my dog just watched....

So far I've killed 2 big fuggs with the old school snap traps, but they've gotten wise. I saw lowes has some of the new style plastic ones for rats (i've used them with mice with great success), but some reviews say they don't always snap the neck right away.

If that should be the case, what method should I use to put them out of my misery? Shovel to the neck?

I considered duct taping my mosin bayonet to a broomstick, but, while epic as hell, that could get messy....

When rats learn snap traps I was taught to bait and set them as normal and then lay a tissue over the trap to cover it. the rats will smell the bait through the tissue but not see the trap.

Fun is fun, but if you want to be rid of them use d-con or some other warfarin based bait.

It's a blood thinner, and if your dog or cat or kid eats the dead rat, it won't get enough to do any damage.

I do have fond memories of thinning out the rat population in the barn with .22 rat shot. I used to think my dad just let me do it because he wanted me to have all the fun. Years later I overheard him telling friends that I was a better shot than he was. Something he never admitted to me, though it was eventually pretty evident.

I have a 38lb Boston terrier and 2 female Beagles and they catch and eat all kinds of small critters around our place. The Boston just tried a few nights ago to bring in the house some dead little evil looking basturd he had killed and was gnawing on. Was probably a mole, was a really weird looking little creature. He's always eating birds and he catches any mice who make it into the house.
