I have done this with gophers (minus the golf clubs and camera)...it works well.
A Cold Steel Big Bore Blow gun. I had the same problem. Some rats took up residence in my Wood Pile. My daughter and I took turns putting darts thru their little necks. They are amazingly accurate once you get the hang of it, and they are lethal on small game.

Environmental reasons aside, you should also avoid poison because you can't control where they die when you poison them.

yep, unfortunately I live in the city limits, otherwise I would have handled the situation in all manner of hilariously satisfying ways. I thought of getting one of those $15 pellet pistols from academy and give it one to the hip, city ordinances be damned.

haha, yeah, Jayne's my favorite character. I dressed up as him when some friends and I nerded out and went to Trek Expo in Tulsa a few years back to meet Adam Baldwin. That was a pretty epic day. I got a pic around here somewhere...
I was doing some remodeling and a momma rat and her brood moved in thru a hole in the wall. Caught a few in traps then they wised up. The poison didn't kill them. I then got a few of those large rodent sticky pads. They work great. They will also catch scorpions, spiders, bugs, etc. Wife got a mouse in her car and it wouldn't touch the trap, sticky pad worked the first night.
Drop the rat and pad into a bucket of water and then the trash. Not as fun as guns and explosives but lethal and legal.
