Environmental reasons aside, you should also avoid poison because you can't control where they die when you poison them.

If you've ever found a foot-long wharf rat in your house after a week's vacation, you'll understand why that's important.

yep, unfortunately I live in the city limits, otherwise I would have handled the situation in all manner of hilariously satisfying ways. I thought of getting one of those $15 pellet pistols from academy and give it one to the hip, city ordinances be damned.

Blow gun's actually a pretty good idea, hadn't thought of that. Good excuse for a new toy

I was doing some remodeling and a momma rat and her brood moved in thru a hole in the wall. Caught a few in traps then they wised up. The poison didn't kill them. I then got a few of those large rodent sticky pads. They work great. They will also catch scorpions, spiders, bugs, etc. Wife got a mouse in her car and it wouldn't touch the trap, sticky pad worked the first night.

Drop the rat and pad into a bucket of water and then the trash. Not as fun as guns and explosives but lethal and legal.
