Haven't had it for a while now but was using it when it was two separate companies running things, DirecTV and USSB if that says anything. If you are worried about signal there are a couple things that can be done, one is you can purchase a larger dish than the 18inch one that you get free, larger dish better signal. In fact you can actually use one of the old C band dishes by getting a compatible LNB. Snow. . . not much down here but when it happens you probably don't want to have to try and knock it off especially if the dish is mounted on a roof out of easy reach, they make a "heater" that is basically a stick on mesh that can melt any snow or ice that accumulates on the dish. You can get one that is automatic (turns on when the temp drops to a certain point) or manual which is probably going to be a better idea since a lot of snow doesn't happen too much down here.

As far as prices. . . all I can say is the "entertainment service providers" are all gonna bend ya over, you just have to try and make sure they sweeten the deal. Don't call in saying you want that package for sports call in act like you don't care and may even hang up then get them to sweeten the deal. The reps have some leeway in prices and if they don't make the deal you like hang up and call back in ten minutes.

Service can't help ya there but as far as the reviews, people generally tend to only make bad reviews and 500 out of hundreds of thousands of subscribers seems pretty low to me.

One note on DirecTV vs Dish. . . I know for a fact Dish leases the equipment and wants it back even if it's really old and outdated, DirecTV doesn't as far as I know. I have one of the gen2 DirecTV Tivo boxes sitting in a closet and you can buy boxes through online sources all day long, you can also sell the dish at the end of your contract for a few bucks to an installer, they are always looking for them and will toss you ten or fifteen bucks for it.

Say what? I had Dish for 6 years until I sold the house. Called them to disconnect. I asked them what I was supposed to do with the receivers and the dish on the roof. They told me to do whatever I wanted to with them as they were now mine. I didn't need to drag the crap across the country so I left them there. Never heard another word from Dish.

on the movie ordering part, even if you wont have phoneline/internet hooked up to your receiver it is still possible to order movie and watch them. When I worked for DTV many years ago we would have people plug in the receiver when they moved and then on the next cycle movies would drop in for billing.

So if you don't want movies ordered I would suggest putting a pin code in to be able to rent them thru the receiver.

I can't order from my remote because I don't have a phone line or internet hooked up to my receiver. This is exactly what my installer told me when he installed my Direct. I would have to order movies over the phone or on the internet.

Call them and demand a Direct Connect kit which is a wireless connection to your home network wi-fi. They'll try to tell you its $100 but they'll sell it to you for $50 but in reality it only $25. I gave them a ****** survey review and they called me and I got the Direct Connect kit for free.

I do not have home wi-fi. At this time, I don't intend to set up a home wi-fi. I don't care to buy movies or pay per view from Direct Tv. I was just putting it out there, that you can get a set up that won't cause accidental purchasing of extra charge items. Or you won't have a child or guest order an extra charge item.

I use Dish and not DTV. I like Dish. I know people that hate Dish. I know people that like DTV and people that hate DTV. So there's that.

Here's the kicker for me. AT&T partners with DTV and is looking to buy DTV. I despise AT&T more that any other company I have ever done business with. Therefore, I will NEVER use DTV.

AT&T...Always Torture and Torment.

As far as ordering movies, I believe that you can watch them up to a point. The receiver only phones home every so often when hooked to a phone line. It will let you order like 20 worth unless it's a ppv fight event or something of that nature and then phone in when the balance gets high enough or so many days have passed. If you never plug in you can watch a couple movies for free till the balance is maxed.

I've had DirecTV since it and USSB were separate companies. I've never had a problem with customer service or with billing (though I pay my bill every month, and don't do the auto-pay thing), and I've never had any "hidden charges." Weather-related drop-outs are rare--even during the Christmas blizzard of a few years ago it never lost signal.

The only complaint I have is that it's rather expensive for as little as I use it. If it weren't for sporting events, I'd probably just ditch it altogether, but that's just a financial consideration.

My parents have Dish, and my dad hates it; he says it's gone when their commitment is finished. They were going to get DirecTV, but they couldn't guarantee that it'd be installed before the Sugar Bowl; Dish could, so that's what they got.
