I caint turn a wrench well enough to build a bicycle without at least one trip to the emergency room.

Me personally, no. I'm fairly adequate at building things if you give me enough time. My step-dad on the other hand...he thinks that "tightening" means pulling a muscle in the process. He's broken quite a few parts by over-tightening.
