To fix pitting you either have to remove metal or add metal . Personally I would add. Look into leading (think oldschool auto body work) I personally haven't tried it but I think it could be better then welding on a gun. One thing that you may think about is if you fill the pitting the new metal may not blue the same

Well, I'm not sure that it is safe to fire in its' current condition. And if I do decide to do work on it, I want it to look like the day it was made in 1944.

I'm not sure how to get rid of the pitting.

Have you tried dry firing it to see if the cylinder turns okay????
