Yes, you are required to have insurance for a house with a mortgage. If you drop your insurance (or it gets dropped by them), then the bank will take out insurance for you at a ridiculous cost.

If the home is paid for, then no, you don't, it's not a car.

Most people don't even know there is such a thing as renter's insurance, most people are dumber than a bag of hammers.

I have to say you guys are paying WAY too much for your insurance. I pay $1100 a year with a $1k deductible and 300K in personal property through Oklahoma Farm Bureau. You don't have own a farm, I sure don't. Cheapest insurance in the state and they pay quickly without a bunch if hassle. I had a lightning strike last year, they replaced over $10000 worth of electronics within a couple of weeks.

The only mandatory auto insurance is liability, as in being able to pay for damages to others. You're not required to carry anything to replace your own vehicle (if you own it free and clear; if there's a note, the bank will likely require it, just as with a mortgage).

Maybe JB will be nice enough to let them move into the camps early.

I would think if they own the house and aren't required to have insurance, it would be easier for them to afford the insurance. It's not like they have a house payment to make.

I had FB several years ago and afte 2 royal screwings from ice storms and FB not wanting to pay anything, I dropped the over bloates scumbags and went with Shelter. Two days later got hit with a tornado and the agent was at my house writing me a check to get us by till the final adjustment.

While I agree, you should be responsible for your own things, like insurance, it is funny how twice now we've burned up and have been refuesed any help by FEMA. Colorado and several other states have had fires or floods and FEMA beats their doors down offering help. I do think that if we pay into the funds that fund FEMA, Oklahoma should see some of the benifits as well.

Down with eastern red cedar, that's all I'm sayin'. I did my part on the land I had access to last winter, got rid of a ton of 'em. One even made a good Christmas tree! My girlfriend at the time didn't even respect my hard work....

So did 85% of these people have their houses totally paid for? Something just doesn't add up to me.

Probably. I think a whole hell of a lot of these people are on land that was passed to them through generations. So the old farm home has been free and clear for some time, or it's just some old mobile that's been set up on the family land.

Either way, the people there cannot afford to own a home, and I'm not talking about the mortgage. I mean the upkeep, the insurance, the maintenance. They think they can save over renting by staying on the land, but then they cannot afford the upkeep of the owned property. I know a hell of a lot of people like this. They should be renters, for no other reason than they cannot keep up with the work and funds it takes to own a home. But in their mind, renting is more expensive because they just look at the rent payment vs mortgage, and ignore all the other costs.

Then there's this guy who just paid off (after 30 years), his 120k home, which on the whole is a pretty decent place to be sure. He damn near lost it in the fire and didn't have insurance. He figured he didn't need it, with the bank not requiring it. :anyone:

I just don't get it.
