Go to the atf.gov website and request an application (they will only ever send you one so don't mess it up.)
fill it out in Triplicate (or more) take the whole packet to the sheriff and get your fingerprints and mug shot made, then ask the sheriff to sign it.
The sheriff will keep one copy and give you back the rest of them.
Keep one copy for yourself and mail the rest to the batfe at the address they give you with your check.

They will send you your certificate but don't sign it.
then within a month they will come see you in person to give you a book, some more paperwork and make sure you have read the book (hint, get the book in advance or download one from the internet and read it.)

The book is called ATF Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide 2005
It is less than 250 pages so reading it won't take that long

Thats all there is to getting the license

Mind sharing what the error was? May be others out there doing the same thing.

1) seller must Print, sign, title, date. (this should be #10 but first one I thought of.)
2) NO WHITEOUT
3) NO ERASING
4) one line through an error then initial the mistake
5) If the customer cannot fill out the form himself you cannot help him with it AND if someone else helps him with the form it has to be witnessed by Another person not you or person helping.
6) ID must be issued by state and have current picture and not be expired.
7) blue or black ink only please
8) No initials for city, (State is ok but not city)
9) Month should be a 2 didget number not a name
10) 2 guns within 5 (business) days gets reported to the atf.
11) watch out for shell buyers, they hold you responsible if the gun is for someone other than the buyer or their family member, do not sell guns that are supposed to be presents for someone else.

12)there are more but I don't remember them.
