If someone was to start carrying/selling firearms and firearm related accessories what specific brands would you like to see? Keep in mind this would be a home shop operation with the availability to meet OKC metro area upon request/schedule...

EGW, C&S, Kart and Nowlin.

Oh, and Dr. Barry Greyson, OlYeller and Kevin Toothman guns.

Better be prepared for a large investment though.

very large... just to get legal, and get a legit business costs around 3-4 g's

Thats just the paper work, permits, liceneses, LLC, recipt books, accounting books, supplies, biz cards.

Try to get a distributor, or a manufacturer to sell to you guns w/o you having a sales tax permit... nope

That dosent count inventory, storefront, overhead, etc.

Then you have to pay OK sales tax every month, Fed tax is very high at the end of the year.

Then you have ATF audits...

You also put yourself at a higher risk for robbery, better stay strapped 24/7

Ya best sleep with your pistol.

Home owners insurance wont cover your inventory, that insurance is different.

Then you have liability insurance, runs about 1000 per year.

I know im missing alot here, but i still love it!!!

If you are doing it at home, there is not much overhead, but you have to advertise, beat the street etc. And you cant meet ppl anywhere to sell guns except for the premisis in which your license is for. But you can do gun shows.
Plus the phone rings off the hook at all hours, you cant lock up your store and go home, your home IS your store.
Ive been doing it for about 3 months now, as a hobby, not making any major money, but its lots of fun!!

Lol... Now that is funny right there ... It takes no investment, no work, so sleepless nights, why ask those customers, that feel you should give your item to them free... I feel your pain.. How is Broken Arrow?

Starting a business, keeping an inventory, is just a walk in the park. And yes Try to to make those first $100,000. purchases before you actually have buyers. And yes find the start up capitol to stock your shelves, so that you are not just selling out of catalogues. Are you ready to make that commitment. Like some of us have? There are some tips you can get about starting up, that you might want to visit with some of us that have. Maybe we can tell you what not to do, because they are mistakes we made. Yes we made them, or should I say I have made them. But I have learned by them. LOL Or not, your choice. Good luck

Hay, where are you getting insurace for that price mine is 2 times that and I had to go with Loyds of London!

A little patchy by here's my 2 cents.....

listen to Nighthawk. it takes some big marbles and drive to make this kind of business work

There is little to no money to be made as a kitchen table FFL Unless you have a lot of time or money to put into it and even then you wont see a good profit for a long while. Guns can not be sold outside of your premises where the license is kept. The only two exceptions to this rule are Gun shows and sanctioned sporting events. Sales Tax is a "beech" Period but unless you want the OTC on your tail ya gotta comply. if you are wanting to do it out of your home then you better know for a fact that it is zoned and lawful to do so and that you re not breaking any neighborhood covenants. Start up business costs are far under 3-4 grand. if you are still very serious then go to the atf's site and read their firearm faq and dealer newsletters. if you can memorize that then you will know more then 99% of the other guys and be able to stay out of trouble. After you are done let me know and I'll help you with the rest.

I've always thought we should do a collaborative OSA store. :)

tyromeo55 is correct. Many people think that you get in the business with very little investment. And that you get rich over night. And there is no risk at all.

Many people that attempt this actually have college degrees in business and they fail. I have seen several gun shops open and close just as fast as they open. because of bad business practices, poor planning, management, and not having the right connections in the trades. Then I have seen them go under because they break the law with ATF, Oklahoma Tax commission, or something as simple as the city Zoning commission.

One of the main players that you need to know if you want to actually want to get started is wholesaler. And you will find there are different kinds.

I am a wholesaler.

Do you have the $15,000. buy in that most manufacturers require for you to play?

That is what it cost to do business.

As a wholesaler I do not charge my Dealers that, and I carry almost all the brands, and I had to pay those start up buy ins.

I have several dealers that purchase from me, that is why I have a show room, and warehouse

The next thing, is are you willing to devote some time to this.
We are here to answer any questions you have, feel free to drop by. We would not be doing it if was not fun. But it is time consuming, you can not make everyone happy, even though you try. And you could loose everything. Some have.

In fact some days I even look at my inventory and think of selling it all and cashing it in selling the business. Then I remember how much fun it is. Another bunch of customers come in, or I build some other way out weapon that looks real cool, and that keeps me going for another month or two.
