Dude, they were headed out to commit a crime on bicycles. I'm thinking planning ahead (or at all) wasn't their strong suit.
When one references a "Higgins boat," they generally mean a Higgins PT boat, but Higgins made a bunch of different types of boats during WWII. IIRC, at one point during the war, over half of the Navy's surface fleet were boats made by Higgins, mostly landing craft.
The DUKW (which are/were used for the tours in Missouri) wasn't a Higgins vehicle, though; as best I can tell, they were made by GM.
Seems like when something like this happens people start thinking 'the cartels' had a hand in it. Back in Ohio a couple of years ago they had a whole family wiped out one night at different locations and everybody was talking drugs and cartels - turns out it was a custody dispute over a child and one family whacked the other family so they could get custody of the kid. This happened not too far from where my younger brother lives.
I'm thinking they set out to rob the salvage yard owner because of rumors of mass amounts of cash and/or gold & silver on hand (or drugs). The victim got the drop on them and shot them first, but either the shootings were not kosher enough to be up front about it or he had something to hide and didn't want LE nosing around. I'm not sure why they were on bicycles - suspended drivers licenses, to be quiet, they didn't own cars, etc.? Sounds like there will be a movie about it some day...

There was no hull on the one we saw at all and no prop. Maybe the one we saw was land only?
