Been going on for a while. Some of the first mounts actually had the sight on its side.

Would it be stupid on a 6" barrel?

Only reason I can think it is stupid on this is because the majority of people would pick a short barrel for self defense and it would be in a holster and that sight would be in the way.

A 6" is not something you normally carry every day in a holster.
I tried a red dot on a S&W 7" barrel and it was very hard to get it lined up to see the dot inside the tube.
Faster and actually was more accurate for me with irons.

Depends on what you are doing as to its value. I have a scoped pistol and have had one for 30 years which I used for hunting and silhouette
