Why would you exclude some firearms deaths when doing a school paper about firearms deaths.

Isn't that what we call cherry picking?

I don't think it is cherry picking if I properly understand the paper topic. Games are played by Second Amendment opponents in which they invent terms like "gun homicides" to mislead people to believe they are talking about murders and manslaughter.

The important statistic is violent crime per capita, IMHO. This is the kind of crime where one gets beaten up, maimed, raped and that changes one's life. IMHO, it is clear that more guns in the hands of good people reduces violent crime per capita.

IF there are more guns in a society, homicides due to firearms will be more, but homicides in general may not be more. In fact, once societal heterogeneity, average age, economic levels, education etc are taken into account, the homicide rate in the USA is not significantly different from other countries at all, actually it may be lower.

And then there is the issue of suicides versus murders as well when considering homicides.
