Typically the lighter the design while maintaining strength plus ergonomics and attachment system will result in a more expensive handguard. Finishing touches like slightly rounding or beveling the cut slots or rails will also add to the cost.
Right now, the best free float hand guards for the money are the ALG Defense handguards. They combine a strong design, with a user serviceable design and barrel nut system at a price point that is very hard to beat. Other companies would charge double this price.
