I have noticed that men in their 60-70s are often the ones that view that kind of work as helping the guy out, "giving" him some work. As if they are downtrodden people that need your help. Maybe it was that way at one time, but it's not now.

When you do find those people, expect sloppy work, poor communication, oil stains on the driveway, cigarette butts on the ground and maybe some of your stuff missing.

Anyone who is saying they’ll work for $17 hr is either an ***** or young/unskilled etc. RUN from that guy on any serious work. He might be ok for chopping up some tree branches or something…

Couple guys on here have already said it pretty well. I will basically just echo them. I’ve been in the construction and handyman business for over a decade. $17 per hour is what we pay newbie helpers who need training…

If I’m not making AT LEAST $35 per hr I ain’t messing with whatever it is

You’re right. I see the guy on Facebook talking about needing work. I’m assuming I’m helping him out by giving him what he’s asking for. I do most of these things for myself, but have to remember that these days it seems $50 an hour is a norm.

No offense intended here… seriously… but just being honest while this discussion is open: typically my least favorite customers are older gentleman who “used to do everything themselves”

They are usually the biggest cheapskates ever, stand over your shoulder while you work, etc

Now you sound like my wife…lol. I’m guilty, I admit to my “frugality” (cheapskate). The only point I was trying to make was that he was the one making FB post on his need for work. I was trying to oblige him.

Well I'm not in my 60s or 70s but after being an office worker for 20 years I actually thought of it that way and insulted some people that were probably smarter than I am. I had to switch my attitude up in my late 30s on the whole thing. I still cringe at the way I acted towards some guys. For instance saying "what!? That's more than I make at my job!". They look at me like well, career advice is extra. Haha

Yep, $50 an hour is $2000 a week @ 8 hours a day. More than I currently make as an IT engineer. A bit tough to swallow for an old cheapskate.

In OK, is there a 'rule' for when handyman work becomes plumbing or electrical work? Can a handyman set a toilet? Replace a ceiling fan or a plug? Just curious if there's a rule of thumb for where the line is?

Sorry for hijack, but seems like it was meandering anyway..
