I was assuming the OP had the common sense to understand an open flame burns oxygen be it kerosene, propane or the kitchen stove and you need a little ventilation. Didn't think anyone on OSA was of the same mentality as the ones you hear about running a generator in the kitchen.

Never hurts to be careful or to remind of the dangers.

setup to heat with wood!

depending on how much initial outlay... one can easily payback in one or two seasons.

only go with wood stoves that have a catalytic converter or secondary burn system. there are a few exceptions to that rule, but not many.

if you can find a used top of the line, wood insert like a Buck Wood Stove. then payback would be easily one season.

during the bad ice storm a few short years back... our power was out for 2.5 weeks. Thanks to backup gensets and my wood stove.... my home was fully functional and toasty.

Hi,

Remember that electric heaters will consume of serious electricity. Don't take short cuts with the extension cords running them - keep them short and heavy gauge.

My furnace is gas so my small 3000 watt generator is plenty enough to run the furnace and house fan for normal heating even during a power outage.

Generator outside is mandatory - don't even think for a second of running it inside anywhere. DO NOT run it in the garage with the garage door cracked for example. Also, get a couple of CO detectors for your house has well.

Good luck,

Alan

During the last ice storm we were without power for a week. Between the fireplace during the day, our gas heating running at night on the generator, and a couple of those little room heaters that run on the itty bitty propane bottles in the bathroom when we were showering we stayed pretty comfortable.

Of course we didn't exactily run around a la naturale either.

There is nothing worse than being constantly cold in my book. Brrrrr...

One little tip: Whatever you do make sure you have the supplies you need to run a week or 10 days without utilities ... we hadn't stored enough gas to run the generator quite that long. It was a real PETA to go fill up those gas cans ... We are much better prepared for the next one than we were the last one.

And I have to give props to my hubby here ... I didn't think we needed a generator. I am really glad he bought one anyway and just ignored me. Dammit, I hate it when he is right ... lol

Due to having an elderly lady living next door, I ran my generator 39 hours straight, except for refilling the gas tank. Fortunately we both have gas heat and my 4 kw generator had no problems handling both houses. I do have enough 10 gauge extension cord to reach her house. Normally I turn the generator off at night. We have a couple of deep cycle batteries with inverters that will power the electric blanket and a light or two all night. They will also handle the TV's and computer for several hours which will take care of the majority of our power outages.
