I'm sure the mohawk was his idea but its the job of the parent to say no

Exactly.
When raising my sons as a single dad, I told them if they came home with an earring, tat, stupid looking hair, stupid looking clothes, their life would quickly become miserable.
I saw an ear piercing hole in the youngest after a weekend visit with the ex.
I gave him his options.
The hole healed.
I always told them that when they turned 18, their body was theirs to do with as they pleased.
I'm totally neutral on folks that want tats, body jewelry, etc, as soon as they get old enough to know if that is the road they want to follow.
Adults have the right to do what ever they want.

steer your kids. he's not yours- lead by example.

we have had a couple generations of child worshipers who are afraid to say NO to their progeny... that is about to come back to roost.

Well, you could show him Natural Born Killers or Taxi Driver and try to scare the crap outta the wee lad. Or just hand him and axe and some matches and tell him to go have some fun.

I actually gave my kids some matches once after finding some on their room. They were young, so we went outdoors, put some leaves together, and let them light it off. It almost got away from them, but dad was there to help. Told them that if they wanted to see fire, I'd work with them to build some. Took the mystery out of it and never had another problem.

TnTRex,

I sympathize with you and believe that you are sincere but he isn't your kid - his parents have a right to do the disciplining they choose to do - or not to do. The best you can do is be the absolute very best role model and uncle you can be while being the best father you can be to your own children.

I do not share the view of some here that "it just doesn't matter" and "kids will be kids" but it also isn't as simple as short hair = good kid and mohawk = bad kid (I know you didn't say that). I think we might agree that a certain degree of discipline, care about personal appearance and appreciation of the sanctity of the body, etc. is a good thing to learn early.
Nonetheless unless there is an extreme example of bad parenting it just isn't your direct call - for good or ill.

Big deal. I shave my kid's hair into a mohawk during the summer just for fun, but when it's time to go back to school, that gets cleaned up to a nice, respectable haircut. Saggy pants, crooked hat - any ghetto/gangsta culture isn't tolerated at my place.

Good grief ...

1. He's NOT your kid.

2. He's NOT your kid.

3. He's NOT your kid.

If I had a nickel for everytime some idiot MAN was gonna "talk to" or "disipline" or "instruct" or "take care of" or "help me out" with my three boys I'd be a wealthy woman right now. My kids, at some point in time had long hair, shaved heads, mohawks, braids, saggy pants, snow white hair, coal black hair, hair that looked like a rainbow snowcone, dressed in clothes that looked like they came from the thrift store because it was "neat", had earrings ... I could go on, but you get my point.

They also turned out to be fine young men who are responsible members of society.

BTW, he's not your kid. You wanna raise a kid, go have one of your own. (Yeah, you hit a nerve ...) BTW, you might try just loving the kid and helping have fun with his uncle, not starting trouble with your brother and his wife and putting the kid in the middle.

Oh, and did I mention ... he's NOT your kid.
