As a friend who's a former Class III dealer said, the $10K fine isn't all that much--it's that 10 years in jail crap that bothers me. (BTW, his business went under; he didn't get busted for anything.) He also used to have people bring him un-papered NFA firearms that granddad had in the back of the closet, usually smoothbore pistols (AOW/short-barreled shotguns); ATF didn't get overly worked up over them, and would just tell him to hold them until they could send someone to collect them, usually within a few days.If you bought a storage unit and found a kilo of cocaine, would you keep it because you paid for it?
Every now and then, though, something else would show up, like an Argentine knock-off of a Mauser Schnellfeuer--a select-fire variant of the Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" pistol. That kind of thing really gets their attention, and they had someone in the store before the end of the day to collect it...
The fine went up a few years ago. It's now 10 years and a $250,000.00 fine.
