I think it all hinges on our ability to increase our overall competitiveness worldwide. The shame is that it seems to be getting worse... as we continue to help other countries join the civilized, industrial and tech world, we continue to level the playing field between us and them. We keep exporting our advantages and at the same time we keep increasing our corporate tax rates, lowering tariffs and generally doing all the wrong things. The other big factor is letting ourselves get raped by our own government in order to support a significant part of our population who live on government subsidies and don't contribute meaningfully to the tax base and the county's productivity.
Normally the cost of living chases minimum wage. An increase in mini mum wage leads to increase in COL. If you look at the cost of gas, historically it has followed minimum wage at approx 1/3. 1950's gas cost about .25 a gallon and minimum wage was .75. It has always maintained that ratio. Today however, gas has gotten ahead of the ratio as i am sure most things have. This would lead one to believe that minimum wage does need to increase, although I(not an economist) believe if would only exaggerate the problem. The only thing that an increase in MW would do is raise collected taxes. I think that's why they want to do it.
Businesses that give a crap about being successful and making money will pay their employees what the market dictates in order to reach the goal of being successful and profitable. Employees are a resource to accomplish the mission...not the mission itself. Take care of the resource based on the market value/value added of said resource.
Walmart and McDonald's pay what the market will bear...and they have no shortage of people lining up to work those jobs.
If wearing a blue vest, collecting carts, or running bar codes across a scanner suddenly becomes worth more than $8 then they will get paid accordingly, without government intervention.
Minimum wage increases hurt the lower and middle class the most. Who buys goods and services produced by minimum wage workers? Lower and middle class folks. Increasing the price of the goods and services lower and middle class people buy doesn't help them. Increasing the work load and decreasing the jobs, does not help them. Minimum wage is a blight on our economy and needs to be abolished. FREEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOMM!!!!!
funny i keep hearing about this as if it was a single issue problem. the real problem is lack of manufacturing jobs and devaluation of the dollar. ^#%% politicians have basically said to other countries: you can market your products here, take american $$$ to your country to build infrastructure and defense, and our people will try to keep up with your economy based on third-world wages, and we'll get more taxes from them to run things.doesn't make much sense to me.
To answer that, you have to think about what a job is. Fundamentally, it is a voluntary association between two parties wherein one gets paid some sort of value to provide some sort of value to the other. If you want more of this type of activity to occur, it seems to me that a good start would be to quit prohibiting so much voluntary association, and quit taking away so much of people's money and paying it to people who provide little or no value to anyone.
Every job has a worth, to be decided by the market. Some people are just not worth $9/hr. This will just cause more unemployment and rising costs of goods and services.
