Maybe a waitress earns $7.25 or less (tips) but both my boys working at Coney Island 20 years ago achieved $9.25 an hour while going to high school.

I guess I don’t understand the issue of making less while training, that’s a temporary condition and not a lifetime wage or living wage. If you can’t find a job well over $10 an hour your not wanting to or not trying. High school kids make minimum wage, adults with experience not so much….JMO

Some need to consider a trade , Vo-tech is a great way to land a good job out of high school or while working their adult programs are very good as well.

USPS is paying over $18 if you can stand the high school mentality of much of the work force, just saying. 🤷

I can't stand that SNAP/EBT is accepted at gas stations and even Amazon now. SNAP should only be for fresh foods.
Well your in luck EBT cards are being used for cash all though the poor. It’s not hard to pay 1/2 price for groceries in those communities. They use the money for smoke, gambling, alcohol.

Its fraud as far as I’m concerned and you sure aren’t helping them out getting out of their addictions, everyone thinks they’re a player. Government knows it’s rampant out of control.

Unless it’s changed the last few years you can only buy food with an EBT, you can’t even buy personal hygiene items.

Just my obversion.

All I know is a single person can't live on 40 hours of minimum wage pay.

But most won't even get the chance to try,,,
Most employers cut off their minimum wagers at 35 hours.

Depends on what that person wants to do. If they don't want a job that requires skills that pays more, then they can choose to live in a extremely small apartment, use sec. 8 housing, OR rent a decent apartment and get a roommate. There are always choices without having the government jack up the minimum wage (which I have pointed out numerous times does nothing as the resulting inflation wipes out any gains).

Okay, I'll agree that it is possible to live off of minimum wage,,,
But it isn't easy or pleasant in any manner.

One can get an apartment that's essentially a dump,,,
One can buy enough food if they don't go crazy with snacks.

But after all of the monthly maintenance bills are paid,,,
What is left for any kind of unexpected emergencies.

I once walked everywhere for three months,,,
I had to choose between car insurance (liability only),,,
Or getting the brakes fixed so I could drive without killing anyone.

So unless you want to have room mates (which sucks),,,
And allow yourself to become a dependent of government programs,,,
One had better get some kind of skills training and try for a better lifestyle.

It wasn't easy and it took me the better part of nine years,,,
But I finally got out of the minimum wage cycle.

I wish I had an answer for this problem,,,
But all the so-called remedies only lead to socialism.

We're doomed!

Aarond, respect to you for doing what needed to be done to better yourself. Many won’t put in the effort. Opportunities are out there. My company starts operators at 20 an hour and we can’t find people to work. It isn’t as easy to get the jobs as, say, fast food, but we will usually give a chance to anyone with a fairly stable work history who presents themselves well at an interview. We struggle to find people who can pass a drug test, will show up to work on time and maintain a professional attitude. With overtime opportunities, these are jobs that will allow one to support a home and family, and we can’t fill them.

Good grief my 16 year old makes $13.00 at Walmart and my 15 year old similar at a local movie theatre. When she was 14 she made $9.50 an hour working at a local tag agency after school for a couple hours each day. Both filled out exactly ONE job application and were hired right then.

If you are trying to live on minimum wage you either have no marketable skillset or you're doing life completely wrong. In today's market you'd be out of your mind to take a minimum wage job.
