Okay, I am very ignorant. I thought LEO could own SBR / SBS without all the NFA BS. Obviously not, or you wouldn't be having this problem...but how is this different than a cop owning a 14" select-fire CAR? Or does the department have to own and issue the "evil" stuff?
On another note, I know I won't pay $200 for 4 in. My wife said she wouldn't either. Can I borrow $200?
I don't have $700 in my SBS and that includes the stamp.
This. A dept. owned NFA item can be "retired" with the officer upon retirement, but it cannot be transferred to anyone else. Upon the officer's death, the gun must be returned to the dept. or destroyed per ATF rules.
Why don't you cut down you 590 to legal minimum and go from there?
What if I knew where you could get a beauty similar to that one complete with ghost ring sights, speed feed stock, mag extension and surefire fore grip for $625? Then all you would have to do is SBS it.
I'll throw you another one Evan. I have a buddy that may still have a few used 14" Benelli's with pistol grip stocks and he could get you into one of those for well under $1,000 including the tax stamp. Most likely enough left over to pay for the Surefire forend.
edit: that 870 right above this post is a killer deal (I'd still rather have the Benelli for about the same $$$)
I have a little over 2 grand in my SBS and it is one of my two most favorite guns (it and my suppressed Browning Buckmark .22). It's worth doing, especially for your purposes. However, make sure you do it right the forst time and plan to keep it. Sell it and you're throwing away the $200 stamp, plus it will bring less than you have in it because most people automatically assume the NFA stuff has been abused. It's a limited market too, so you have to price accordingly.
I want one of my buddie's Benelli's bad, but simply can't justify it to the CFO when I already have an SBS that cost three times as much.
I forgot it had a sidesaddle on it too. Here's a pick to make you drool..

I have an 18" 870 and SBSing it is on my list of things. You can usually find the factory barrels on ARF for reasonable prices and they have them from Botach (ewww) for 250 (a little high). Why don't you just try your mossy out at 18" first GED. Mine is still pretty handy at that. Heck, I bought it for my wife to use for house cleaning when I'm away .
