According to CBS news (if you believe a word they say) there are 41 wars or armed conflicts going on at this time.

As far as the deer rifle army getting steamrolled, not when they are fighting alongside our military. More like a territorial militia force freeing the standing military for other operations and a good many of them are veterans.

The Wermacht was armed with the K98 - essentially a deer rifle.

Which army today issues a bolt action as the MBR? We might as well point out the Roman Legions used swords.

In any case, the point is a rifle doesn't give you magical powers and an understanding of tactics. History is chock full of examples where a far-outnumbered band of aggressors defeated an entrenched, complacent foe.

My point is that none of us should falsely cling to the idea that an armed population is the end all undefeatable defense.

That doesn't mean we have to be resigned to defeat by any means. An armed population with effective leadership won our freedom from tyranny. It can do it again. We are guarding against tyranny right now by our sheer numbers. Why else would those in power work toward disarming us?

Point taken. But an enemy that should have collapsed on June 6th, 1944 was armed with a bolt action rifle as its primary weapon. Essentially unchanged from the late 19th century. The Mauser action is to be found on many deer hunting rifles to this day.
