Legalizing Marijuana

so, as i've posted before, my wife has had an unexplainable and untreatable headache for the past four years (in august). This is an all day, every day, no day off headache that varies between dull and throbbing to sharp and stabbing. We've been to every type of doctor you can think of, including four at the Mayo clinic. She has been on everything from anti-depresants (they give those for headaches), to beta blockers to anti-convulsants to you name it. Nothing has helped relieve the pain and some have done some seriously messed up things to her head/emotions.

One drug she was on has helped, but it also made her blood pressure shoot to 190/x, which is damn high for a 35 year old woman who runs 4 miles a day.

Her most recent doctor (a pain specialist at a hospital in memphis) put it best. He pointed out that all of the drugs she has tried to 'fix' the problem are worse for her in the longterm than the headache and that maybe it was time to test other pain management drugs. The one he suggest is basically synthetic weed. The active ingredient is the same as in pot.

So, we get her prescription filled, $12 for the bottle and our insurance saved her ~$595. But because it was created by big pharm, it's gotta be safer than the stuff that grows in a field, right?

I never really cared one way or another about medical pot until all this started. The drugs they've tried have made her more stoned than the new prescription, has done really messed up things to her appetite, emotional stability, blood pressure and many other things. You can point to the 'ruined families' all you want, but if something natural can provide her with even a bit of relief then i am all for it at this point. at least for me, from a medical perspective, marijuana laws are increasingly stupid and harmful

Marinol? The problem with this prescription is that it's hard for the patient to alter their dosage. If your wife had access to marijuana (legally), she may only need one puff off a joint, pipe, bong, vaporizer or 1/4 of a pot cookie, 1/2 a pot cookie, etc in order to relieve her of her pain, and depending on the severity, she might be able to consume actual marijuana without really ever getting "high". With Marinol, 1 pill is often too much THC that's needed for the application, producing some unwanted side-effects in the patient.

I feel your wife's pain ... My headaches were constant for a while (couple of years, at least) but FINALLY broke ... Now they are just 80% of the time or so ... I don't know what the answer is but I can tell you this ... "Modern" medicine has done absolutely nothing to help, and a lot of times made the situation worse. I've said this here before but the only time in my adult life I have been headache-free was when I was in college and smoked pot -- usually on the weekends. I've given serious thought to being a "criminal" again but GC would **** and fall back in it ... I can hardly wait for him to retire so it won't matter what he (or the department) thinks anymore ... I'd much rather smoke a joint once or twice a week than chew percocet like they are M&Ms day after day after day ...

The problem with prohibition laws is that the cure is worse than the disease.

1. So America decides to outlaw alcohol and that requires a new .gov agency to enforce the prohibiton.
2. Enter A.T.F.
3. The alcohol smugglers are making big money and protecting their turf so they need more powerful weapons, automatic weapons like Tommy guns.
4. A.T.F. is outgunned so now we need a new gun law to register and control Tommy guns.
5. Americans repeal prohibition but the A.T.F. and NFA laws remain.

Fast forward and repeat:

1. The "War on Drugs" is launched by Richard Nixon in 1971.
2. The D.E.A. is established in 1973
3. The drug smugglers are making big money and protecting their turf so they need more powerful weapons and lots of them.
4. A.T.F and D.E.A. are outmatched and ineffective so we need new drug, search and seizure, and firearms laws.

You guys have no idea how valuable the stuff REALLY is on the street....try anywhere from $3.5-5k for the good stuff if buying a single pound, here in Oklahoma, Importing costs $$.
