It's no secret that I have a thing for the Swedes. I had been wanting an M94 for awhile and my brother called me last week from a pawnshop, describing what sounded like a M94. He picked it up for an unbelievable price, making me one happy camper. Most of these have been Bubba'd pretty hard, driving up the price of the originals. This particular example is a 1904 and was not converted to the M94\14 model with the bayonet lug. I have a reproduction nose cap on the way for it and hope that one day I might find an almost unobtainium original. Someone applied varnish on the stock and some of the metal parts decades ago but so far it is coming off with just a fingernail. I haven't been able to remove the main stock yet as I can't the rear action screw to budge and have broken two screwdrivers in the process. The stock will be carefully restored with the proper military finish.
So far, this is all numbers matching except the bolt which is 2 digits away from the receiver. I've altered the serial number in the pics. For reference, the M94 has a barrel under 18" so it feels like a 10/22 but packs a little more punch.

Nice! I looked in my spare parts stash to see if I had any with that 3-digit SN, but alas - no dice. Sometimes you can get lucky looking through the parts bins at gun shows or with a WTB ad, and find the matching-numbers parts you'd need, if you want to go that route.
That stock disc is quite the find, as I mentioned earlier
It says "Rifle No. 51, 7th Company, 4th Artillery Regiment." That makes sense, as M94's often were issued to artillery, engineer, and train troop formations, much like the M1 Carbine was issued largely to support troops. I've only seen one other M94 that had a stock disc, as most of those were removed prior to their importation to the US.Welcome to the world of M94 ownership!

Yep, handguard matches the receiver number. Once I get the main stock off, I betcha it matches the receiver number as well. So this thing is SO close, other than the bolt. Also, if you look carefully, you can see a tiger stripe pattern in a few places on the stock. I'm hoping that once I get it stripped and refinished, the tiger stripe will be a little more prevalent.

Nice M94. I've been really eyeing them and the K31s ever since Sol brought me some 7.5 brass for a custom pen. I guess I need to see if I can do one with 6.5 as well.

I was able to remove the stock and sure enough, it matches the receiver number. I've also been able to remove probably 90% of the varnish using nothing more than my fingernails.

I think I'm going to go with Tom's 1/3 mix, which has been formulated for an authentic military finish. It's BLO, turpentine, and bee's wax.
The Swedes used plain linseed oil, so if it were mine, I'd use BLO only. I'm not a big fan of putting wax on a military stock, but hey - it's your rifle
