Received this email from the Gov's staff today...just thought I would post it, pretty sure some people on this board also received the same...

Dear Friend:

Thank you for your recent email to Governor Fallin regarding legislation that would make the open carry of a firearm legal in the state of Oklahoma. Governor Fallin appreciates your willingness to share your views and has asked me to respond.

As you know, Governor Fallin signed Senate Bill 1733, a measure that allows Oklahoma citizens to openly carry firearms, into law on May 15, 2012. As a gun owner and member of the National Rifle Association, the right to bear arms is important to Governor Fallin, and she believes that the ownership rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment should be extended to every responsible Oklahoman. Senate Bill 1733 affirms that Oklahoma values the rights of its citizens to defend themselves, their family and their property.

The bill permits those who are licensed, or already have been licensed, to carry a firearm under the Oklahoma Self Defense Act openly or concealed. It also allows property owners to openly carry a firearm on their property without a handgun license for the purpose of self-defense. To receive a license under the Oklahoma Self Defense Act, applicants must take a firearms safety and training course and submit to a background check by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Generally, those convicted of felonies and certain misdemeanors may not receive a handgun license, unless pardoned by the Governor.

With Governor Fallin’s signature on SB 1733, Oklahoma becomes the 25th state with either permissive open carry laws (no permit required) or licensed open carry (permit required). Oklahoma now joins Utah, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Hawaii and Massachusetts as a licensed open carry state.

Governor Fallin welcomes your input and values your thoughts as she explores ways to make Oklahoma a safe place to live, while also protecting our constitutional rights. As we work together to ensure a prosperous future of our state, we hope you will continue to share your thoughts and views with us.

Sincerely,

Public Affairs Division
Office of Governor Mary Fallin
