WOW! i have read that the 30-284 duplicates the 30-06 and why would you need one.

Now look at the shoulder and looking at your 3400fps with a 155gr I feel it kicks the 30-06 in the rump.

Now best i have got my 30-06 is 3,176 fps, accurately with the sierra #2156 palma 155gr ..
Now my barrel is 22" compared to your 29" but surely there is not that much speed gained in 7" more barrel

Thanks for the specs D&T.

Noticed guys how many times it had to be shot to determine actual trajectory...
Get out and shoot those rifles!!! deer gun is soon to hit.. :)

What's the difference from that and a 7.5 Swiss?
I was told (by someone that SHOULD know) that the Win .284 was created from the 7.5 Swiss, .30-.284 sounds like it came full circle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was it's own cartridge built in the early 60's and didn't have a true parent case. It does have the same case capacity as the Swiss though.

I don't know - I was told it was developed from the Swiss case, but I'm no expert. That's why I was asking - the ballistics on the 7.5 are great, really awesome considering the other military rounds that were fielded by other nations at the time it was introduced.
I may be way wrong, but what I thought:
7.5 Swiss to .284 Win then .284 Win to 6.5-.284. I do know the 6.5-.284 is a bad machine, and lots of serious distance shooters have adopted it.

Dennis,

here is a little more information on my 30-284...

I started with the best brass I could find - Lapua 6.5-284. I made a tapered neck expanding mandrel and necked the 6.5 brass up to .30 caliber...

I use Redding's 3 dies set for loading...

i193.photobucket.com_albums_z132_HonkerHunter_photos_30_284_015_zps3d9045df.jpg

Here is a 308 Winchester on the left for comparison, a 30-284 center and then a 30-06 Ackley Improved...

The 30-284 is loaded with Hornady's 155 gr. A-MAX and the 30-06 Ackley is loaded with Hornady's 208 gr. A-MAX...

Here is the load for both cartridges:

***30-284***

CASE: Lapua 6.5-284 brass necked to .30 caliber / Match prepped...

PRIMER: Winchester WLRM...

POWDER: Hodgdon 414 / 62.0 gr...

BULLET: Hornady 155 gr. A-MAX / bullet seated .005 into lands...

VELOCITY: 3,400 fps...

COMMENTS: A "standard" primer dropped velocity 72 fps. when compared to the magnum primer, now used in the load...

***30-06 Ackley Improved***

CASE: Lapua 30-06 / Match prepped / fireformed in custom barrel and chamber...

PRIMER: Federal 210 Match...

POWDER: IMR-4350 / 55.2 gr...

BULLET: Hornady 208 gr. A-MAX / seated .009 into lands...

VELOCITY: 2,700 fps. from 30" barrel...

COMMENTS: This load information came from the customer I built this 30-06 Ackley Improved for....

Neither load listed should be shot in any other rifle or handgun chambered in these calibers, without first dropping the listed powder charge by 10%

A couple of questions....

Why would you neck the round up to 30 cal rather than sticking with the parent .284 case and higher BC 7mm bullet?

What advantage does the round have over the 6.5-284 utilizing high BC 6.5mm bullets?

I notice you specifically utilize the 155 A-Max in the shorter case but utilize a heavier bullet in the AI case.
What would be the velocity comparison if the 155 was utilized in the higher capacity AI case?

Not knocking your choice, just trying to educate myself on the merits.

B Gordon,

I already have a 280 Ackley Improved as well as a 7mmX300 Wby. I did not need another 7mm...

This barrel WAS chambered in an improved version of the '06 before I cut it back 1", rethreaded and rechambered it. Same velocity...

The 30-06 Ackley with the 208 gr. Hornady A-Max is not mine. It was built for a customer in Arkansas who uses it for elk and mule deer and has already killed both with his gun, using the above mentioned load...

I load the 155 gr. A-MAX because I like its performance on deer, and it also makes for one heckuva coyote round too. Not to mention that I've still got over 4,000 of those particular bullets on hand, so why not use them....
