Depends on what you're calling provocation. From the Russian point of view Ukraine provoked this.
As far as WW2, we also should remember and respect Russia's role. We could not have won without them and they had the largest losses by far, around 24 million. That's 3 times the number of Jews that died.

Reports from the Crimea indicate that Russia has scuttled one of it's own ships in order to prevent the Ukrainian navy from entering the Black Sea. Even if we suspend reality for a moment and pretend that the "self defense" forces in the Crimea aren't really Russian special forces, blockading the Ukrainian navy is clearly an act of war:
