I suggest you jump over to the CMP forums and roam around in there for a while. Lots of very sound info from some hardcore Garand nuts. There's also a very good facebook group or two.
The guys are correct in that virtually all Garands have been re-built by one armory or another. The only serialized part on an M1 is the receiver, so matching numbers aren't really going to happen. You're not going to find an original as issued Garand. You can find some with the parts all made by the same manufacturer during the same period, and those are hot items if you want to pay the man. They'll be builds that somebody pieced together. I bought a service grade Springfield from the CMP. Late WW2 receiver and the guts are a tossed salad as far as manufacturers. I don't care because I wanted one to shoot the hell out of and I have. 750 bucks delivered to my front door. If you don't like it, stick it in the classifieds and you can sell it for 300 more than you paid. Just do yourself a favor and learn a little bit so you don't get screwed. The info you need is all over the internet and so are tons of parts. Ammo is no problem too find either. I've been shooting a lot of new PPU Garand specific stuff that does fine. About .64/rnd.
These guns are beautifully made, easy to shoot well, and a piece of history to boot.

Yep, like rvcooper said, the cmp guns come to your front door. Kinda cool, who else does that?
If you don’t care about the receiver/furniture specifics, this is the answer. If you do, put out a WTB and buy exactly what you want for a small premium. If you want a Winchester or IHC receiver, be prepared to pay more

If you just want a good shooter and don’t care about a mixmaster, look for a Garand with a 1960s Springfield barrel with low wear. As a group, those barrels are the most accurate.

Or, a Danish return with a VAR barrel. Also quite accurate as a whole.
I got a Danish return from perplexed years ago. It won’t ever leave my collection.

What’s the value of a Danish return with a VAR barrel?

What’s the value of a Danish return with a VAR barrel? I’ve traded for one and not sure quite how to price it. I consider it in excellent condition The stock is Danish also with the tag/label on the inside.

If you want to order from the CMP you cant just order one you must fulfill there requirements, it's simple and the instructions are on the web site. Also if you don't want to drive to the stores you can go to the CMP games held each year at the Oklahoma city gun club. They changed its date but it is posted on the site as well. If you have never shot in competition before look at the matches, read the rules and pick one. That will fulfill one of the requirements for buying an M-1 from them. Last year they had a good selection of rifles from field grade to collector grade and more then a few M-1C and D model snipers. Anyone can order parts, ammo, EN blocks, and tools from them without any problem. The world of the M-1 is fun and addictive. A few days on the CMP web site is a eye opener, you will love it. When you get your first one learn to clean and lube it right. www.garandgear.com has some great information as well. Enjoy yourself and when you do buy, remember you owe us a range report.
