Can you have too many magazines? I don't think so.

If you own magazines for guns you don't have, you have do many magazines. I don't think so either.

I buy as many mags as I can over the years. It just depends on price and quantity.

Let's say someone has 10 glock mags that they want to sell in bulk and aren't getting any traffic cause no one wants 10 mags.
If I can get them at a damn good price, I'm all in.

Same for any other gun I have.

I remember Sten mags at 2 bucks a pop and Grease Gun mags at under 10 bucks.
Both types of mags will last forever.
Hell, even without bullets in them, they would make good clubs!!

As to "if you have mags for a gun you don't own", I remember Thompson mags for under 10 bucks.
I wish I had bought a bunch.
Same for Soumi coffin mags and a few others.

I've been through two major magazine "scares".
I can still remember getting on the phone after the vote on the first Assault Weapons Ban when you weren't going to be able to buy new mags over 10 rounds.
Immediately after that vote, seems like EVERY distributor was out of stock.
Back then, standard capacity Glock mags were going for 60-75 bucks.

And let's not forget those days of the first ammo scare. About the same time as the AWB.
Couldn't find ammo.
Couldn't find brass.
Couldn't find primers.
I can remember Gibson's being one of the few places in town with primers and limiting them to 100 primers a person.

During this last "scare" you couldn't find .22 mags.
Ruger 10/22 mags were going for 20-25 bucks each at the wholesale level.

I sold some mags at a profit during this last go round. Not going to lie about that.
But, my friends that found themselves suddenly short and worried?
They got 'em for what I had in 'em.

Like someone said, I remember when .22 ammo was plentiful as ants at a picnic.
Try to find some now.

I'm a firm believer in buying what I can afford and holding on to it.

After a two year search I found some mags for my Ruger Mark III pistol.
Majestic Arms had some with extended base pads for not much more than factory mag prices. Universal. Will run in Mark II, and III.
Of course after visiting their website, had to buy the slide racker, and speed strip.
This dammed internet is going to make me go broke!

I would say that you can never have too many but you can only carry so many. But you can use them as a good investment. I definitely need more glock mags. But since magpul is releasing a $16 mag I will soon have what I need.

Notwithstanding some folk's need/desire to have as many mags as possible at the range, in just about all other instances, the real question is "how many mags can you carry and still accomplish your mission?"
