Check out an Earth Roamer, there built on an F-550 chassis.

I'd rock it daily too. Need 4x4 for snow and muddy roads, not really for offroading.
I'd want the short 144" but tall roof. They say if you're 6'4" or less you can stand up in the back. I'm a bit too tall to stand up but that means minimal bending over which would be AWESOME.

Seen people with these that have tons of miles. Saw an odometer on one of the Facebook groups that had 817k on the clock.

Camper outfitted/equipped or just a DYI buildout chassis?

I wouldn't want one that's all done up. I think add basic walls and floors in the back, then maybe make some modular inserts for basics. I'd only want it as a camper a few times a year...the rest would just be nice to have the SPACE to haul just about anything.

Van camping is the hot new deal for the younger crowd, but they quickly get discouraged with the tiny amenities and put them for sale. I've heard there are some bargains out there.

Red River two years ago. Our fire dept's grass rigs are extended cab f550 PSD with 6" lifts and 40" super singles. I wouldn't really want to travel across the US on vacation in one lol.
