Who members this on I 35?
That looks like Mount Franklin at Robinson and I-35 in Norman, but it would have to be before Robinson crossed the interstate, which was before my time.
If I remember correctly I was told that a branch of the military, Air Force I believe, used that as a backstop for target practice.
That's what I remember tooIf I remember correctly I was told that a branch of the military, Air Force I believe, used that as a backstop for target practice.
I was also told that it was a shooting backstop. That was a Navy base during WWII (that’s why it’s still called North Base by old timers), so most likely it was them, although the National Guard armory is still on North Base, not far from the NSSL and the old NWS office. Tri-City (on the south bank of the Canadian) used to be a National Guard range. If I remember correctly I was told that a branch of the military, Air Force I believe, used that as a backstop for target practice.

It depends on whom you ask. It has at least two different names; Mount Franklin was what I remember it being called when I was a kid.It was called Mt. Wilson I think
It was a backstop. You should remember it, it was taken down in the 80s I think.I was also told that it was a shooting backstop. I remember the hill; it wasn’t taken down until OU sold off part of the property for commercial development about 20 years ago. The part that was before my time was when Robinson didn’t cross I-35. When I was a kid it was just a 2-lane overpass, but it did cross. At least I’m pretty sure it did.It was a backstop. You should remember it, it was taken down in the 80s I think.
