Does one year of ROTC at Cameron College (it wasn't a university back then) count?
I was 1-A back in 70, but never got called. I considered joining, but never did. I remember a Coast Guard recruiter set up a table in the student union and I thought "Coast Guard, what a bunch of wimps." Later I heard the CG has the toughest boot camp of all. Don't know if that's true, but did hear it. (not trying to start a fight, just what I heard)
Anyway, a few years ago we were at Wilmington, NC and across the river was a large CG cutter (or some kind of boat) and I thought, "You dumb ass, you could have been driving that thing."
The main reason I didn't join any of the services was I just did not want to have to move around every year or so. My dad and his three brothers all served in WWII, and my dad was also in Korea. My brother served in 'Nam. I'm the black sheep of the family I reckon. There's a part of me that still wonders, "Could I have endured combat? Am I man enough?" I glad I never had to answer that question, but the question is still there in the back of my head.
I'm an other, applied and processed through MEPS but I was delayed entry waiting on a non graduate slot. 6 months later my situation had changed and I decided not to go when the slot came open. I still kick myself for that.
U.S. Army 1995-99. Heavy wheeled mechanic. It was the right thing to do. I wouldn't be the man I am today without the discipline I was taught. Prior to me, my father was a Vietnam Vet, marine. My grandfathers, both sides, were Army vets from WWII. My sister served 2 years RA as well.
6 Years active duty US Navy. 3 deployments to the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm/Desert Shield/Operation Iraqi Freedom assigned to sub-tenders. Lived 4 years in San Diego and lived my last 2 years on the island of Guam. Poor me,.. haha. The greatest duty of all time. 6 months in Guam,.. 6 months in Sasebo and Yokouska Japan.
I got to see parts of the world I would have never seen by myself,.. I was also forced to grow up. I realized that if I make a mistake in my job,.. people could die.
Go Navy !!! Still get goosebumps when the commercial comes on tv.
My dad was 6 years USAF Active Duty. Was stationed in Turkey during the Redstone Missle Program. Remember that little thing called the Cuban Missle Crisis?? My dad's air base was right on the USSR-Turkey border and one of the reasons the USSR sent missles to Cuba. He's got a story or two.
